Mitsubishi announced the official product line name of their upcoming laser televisions, LaserVue. The new technology is expected to birth its first product by Q3 this year, just in time for holiday sales.
The first laser TV from Mitsubishi is supposedly going to be a 65” model. The TV will be able to display twice the colors of standard or even current HD televisions.
QPC Lasers, a designer and manufacturer of high brightness, high power semiconductor lasers for the consumer electronics, industrial, defense, and medical markets, announced that the company has delivered initial semiconductor lasers in connection with its Laser TV contract, fulfilling the first $1 Million of the development phase of the contract.
The contract provides for an exclusive supply relationship that carries a potential value of up to $230 million over the 10 year term of the contract.
The laser technology advocates claim that the technology will allow displays with a richer, more vibrant color palette than the conventional plasma, LCD or CRT displays. They also claim the displays will: * be half the weight and cost of Plasma or LCD displays * require around 25% of the power required by Plasma or LCD displays * be very thin like Plasma and LCD displays are today * have a very wide colour gamut * have a 50,000 hour life
